Mido takes its name from the Spanish "yo mido", meaning "I measure", and Georges Schaeren founded the company in 1918. Keeping water out came early, with a cork seal for the crown arriving in 1930. Architecture shapes several Mido lines: All Dial takes its cues from the Colosseum in Rome, Belluna from Art Deco buildings, and Great Wall from the landmark it is named after.
The company is based in Le Locle, in the Jura mountains, and is part of the Swatch Group. Its movements include Caliber 80, the base for the Commander Big Date, its chronometer models go through official COSC testing, and the current range also includes the Multifort TV Big Date.
