Have you ever wondered if there were differences between the Thanksgiving celebration in Canada versus the Thanksgiving celebration in the U.S.? Some people didn’t even know that the Thanksgiving holidays exist in both countries. The differences are actually pretty interesting. Of course, in both countries, Thanksgiving is a day to spend with family and give thanks, which makes it one of the most traveled weekends of the year.

In Canada, the holiday started off as a religious feast to give thanks each year for the bountiful harvest. In America, Thanksgiving was also a religious observance for communities to thank God for their common purpose. Some historians suggest that the first Thanksgiving celebration was in Canada, while others maintain it was in the U.S. We are not really sure who to believe!

Here are a few facts we do know:

Canadians celebrate on the 2nd Monday in October providing their residents a three-day weekend. Americans observe their holiday on the 4th Thursday in November giving citizens a four-day weekend. It is a national holiday in America and is optional in Atlantic Canada. The Thanksgiving feasts are similar with a few minor twists that change by region. Both countries have nationally televised parades followed by a day of football.

One of the biggest differences between the two is that in the U.S. the Thanksgiving holiday is also about heavy-duty shopping. Before the internet, stores were bustling with crowds and long lines. Luckily today shoppers do not have to deal with such chaotic shopping outings. The deals and discounts are tough to beat.
